Description
Tegernsee - Lake Garda
Facts
The tour leads from Lake Tegernsee through the Inn Valley along the old Brenner Road to Italy and from there through the Eisack and Etsch Valleys to Lake Garda. With only 3,000 meters in altitude and 370 kilometers in six stages, it is the perfect tour for Transalp beginners and bikers who like to take it easy and enjoy the country, the people and regional specialties on their Alpine cross.
Requirements
The route runs mainly on paved and unpaved bike paths as well as side roads. With the exception of a few gravel roads in the ascent and descent, no technically challenging sections are to be expected. Even though the sporting demands of the individual daily stages are moderate, good preparation for this trip is highly recommended in order to spend six consecutive days in the saddle.
Highlights
For landscape fans: Tegernsee, Achensee, Inntal, Brenner, wine and fruit-growing areas of South Tyrol, Kalterer See, Trento and, of course, Lago di Garda at the end.
For cult(o)urists: the "silver city" of Schwaz, medieval Sterzing, picturesque Brixen, Bozen and the wine village of Kaltern. Finally, the city of the Council, Trento, a cultural city with a lot of flair and Roman excavations.
For gourmets: a culinary journey through Tyrolean cuisine, South Tyrolean wines and Italian delights.
Route
From Tegernsee we go over the Achen Pass and Achensee into the Inn Valley and over the old Brenner Road to Italy. We are in South Tyrol and biking to Sterzing. From there we continue along the Eisack river to the picturesque Brixen. Through the Etsch Valley we follow the South Tyrolean Wine Road to Trento. Only a small pass still separates us from our destination. At the end of the tour it is called: Enjoy the view and roll down to Lake Garda!
Details & stages
Saturday
arrival
Sunday
Stage 1 - From Tegernsee to Schwaz: approx. 70 km; approx. 500 m ascent
Over the Achen Pass you will reach the shimmering turquoise Achensee, from where you will roll into the Inn Valley to today's destination: the silver city of Schwaz.
Monday
Stage 2 - From Schwaz to Steinach am Brenner: approx. 50 km; approx. 70 m ascent
From Schwaz we follow the Inntalradweg in the direction of Innsbruck. The picturesque town of Hall invites you to take a break. Hall was a prosperous salt town in the Middle Ages. Up to Hall it is still mostly flat along the Inn River, but from now on this changes. Along the old Roman road, the route climbs steadily to Steinach am Brenner.
Tuesday
Etappe 3 - Von Steinach am Brenner nach Mühlbach: ca. 65 km; ca. 800 m ascent
We quickly conquered the last meters of altitude up to the Brenner Pass. The descent is gentle and away from the transit route on an old railroad line through tunnels with a magnificent view of the surrounding mountain ranges. We stop for lunch in Sterzing. This medieval town invites you to stroll around. In the early afternoon we set off for Mühlbach on a very nice bike path tends to go downhill, but there is also the one or other counter climb to overcome. Mühlbach is a very nice little town at the beginning of the Puster Valley. An ice cream or a Spritz at the beautifully situated church square is actually a "must have".
Wednesday
Stage 4 - From Mühlbach to Auer: approx. 85 km; approx. 600 m ascent
First we head back in the direction of the Eisack Valley, then it's a speedy downhill ride to Bressanone. Here we should definitely make a short cappu stop in front of the cathedral. The cathedral square and the old town of Bressanone are certainly one of the most beautiful three squares in South Tyrol. It is not without reason that the popes have spent their summer retreats here for centuries. The departure is not easy, but we still have a long way to go and more highlights are waiting. We drive always along the Eisack Valley partly on an old railroad line to Bolzano. Here a detour into the leafy streets is absolutely recommended, there are few shopping streets as beautiful as these in the Alps. Passing Sigmundskron Castle, we ride on an old railroad line to Kaltern and continue across Lake Kaltern to Auer.
Thursday
Stage 5 - From Auer to Trento: approx. 45 km; approx. 100 m ascent
Today we have a rolling stage ahead of us. We can either go to Lake Kaltern in the morning for a swim stop or we can drive to Trento and spend the afternoon in this beautiful city. The city center of Trento is very worth seeing, especially the Roman excavations.
Friday
Stage 6 - Von Trento an den Gardasee: approx. 55 km; approx. 300 m ascent
Initially, the day begins like Thursday: we roll briskly south along the bike path and the Adige River. However, we still have a small pass ahead of us before we have a magnificent lake view of Lake Garda. We can take our lunch break at Lake Garda and celebrate our Transalp there!
