Description
Tegernsee - Lake Garda
Facts
This tour goes along beautiful forest paths from Tegernsee to Lake Garda. With its 6400 m ascent and about 390 kilometers this is an ideal Transalp for beginners.
Requirements
Except a few sections where you have to push your bike, this tour is easy to ride. The downhills are rather easy and can be easily mastered by all mountainbikers.
Highlights
For landscape lovers: A wonderful climb up to the Pfitscher Joch with a view to the border comb region, fantastic views to the South Tyrolean wine region, the Kalterer See and Lago di Garda.
Route
This tour leads from Tegernsee into the Valepp, then gently sloping down into the Inn Valley. Further we ride through the Zillertal and along the Pfitscher Joch over the main ridge of the Alps to Sterzing and further over the Montiggler lakes into the Etsch valley. From Trento we cycle over the Monte Bondone to Lake Garda.

arrival
Sunday
Stage 1 - Kreuth - Stumm: ca. 60 km; ca. 800 m ascent
We start our tour from Kreuth past the imperial house through the Brandenberger Ache to Brixlegg. In the small town Rattenberg we have a coffee to cycle the last few kilometers along the Ziller to Stumm.
Monday
Stage 2 - Stumm - Dominikushütte: ca. 40 km; ca. 1300 m ascent
We cycle further through the Zillertal to Mayrhofen. Here the Zillertal cycle route ends and we head for the Schlegeis reservoir. Following side streets we cycle steady uphill over Ginzling to the restaurant Breitlahner. From Ginzling we can switch to a nice hiking trail which runs parallel to the street. Then we continue to cycle moderately further on the street towards the enormous dam of the Schlegeis reservoir. In the late afternoon we arrive at the Dominikushütte and can go for a walk or enjoy the rustical alpine hut ambience and the unique mountain view.
Tuesday
Stage 3 - Dominikushütte - Mühlbach: ca. 70 km; ca. 950 m ascent
Today the Pfitscher Joch awaits us, one of the most famous crossings of the main Alpine ridge. A hiking trail winds its way from the reservoir up to the Pfitscher Joch-Hut (2275 m). The way is partially passable but we have to be prepared for a few parts where we have to hop off our bikes. The beautiful alpine scenery rewards our efforts. Arrived at the hut, we also finally arrived in Italy and celebrate our border crossing with a creamy cup of cappuccino. We then ride on a gravel descent that is fun to the Pfitscher Valley, the „sunny side“ of the Alps. In Sterzing we allow ourselves an ice-cream before we cycle the last kilometers on the cycling route to Mühlbach.
Wednesday
Stage 4 - Mühlbach - Auer: ca. 85 km; ca. 900 m ascent
Today we first cycle in the direction of the Eisack Valley, and then it goes down to Brixen at high speed. We have to take a short stop for a cup of cappuccino in front of the cathedral. The cathedral square and the historic old historical center of Brixen are for sure the most beautiful places in South Tyrol. Not without reason popes spend their summer months since centuries here. Leaving is not easy but we still have got a long distance to cover and there are also some highlights on our route. We cycle further along the Eisack Valley partly on the old railway line to Bolzano. Here, a short excursion into the arcades is absolutely necessary. Past the castle Sigmundskron we ride on an old railway line to Kaltern and further over the Kalterer See to Auer.
Thursday
Stage 5 - Auer - Trento: ca. 80 km; ca. 1200 m ascent
Friday
Stage 6 - Trento - Lake Garda: ca. 55 km; ca 1000 m ascent
The last climb of our Transalp awaits us. We have to cycle up 1000 m again before we have to concentrate on our last downhill - and we finally arrive! Collective joy, photo shoot and an ice-cream at the lake promenade. In the evening we can celebrate our finished Transalp with traditional Italian pasta and antipasti!
