Route des Grandes Alpes

Pure altitude rush on the Route des Grandes Alpes! Over ten famous Tour de France passes with an incredible 16550 meters of altitude lie ahead of us on the 680 km long route from Geneva to the Côte d'Azur! The whole spread over seven stages and peppered with numerous goosebumps moments in high alpine surroundings.
Sitting power for seven stages and stamina for up to 2800 meters in altitude per day are basic requirements for this tour. Stamina for long, steep climbs and concentration for extended descents are also required of you. You should have 2000 to 3000 training kilometers in your legs.
The entire route in the footsteps of the Tour de France on mostly low-traffic roads is a single highlight: one pass follows another, one breathtaking view follows another. The Cormet de Roseland with its turquoise reservoir, the Col de la Bonette with its spectacularly varied course and 60 km long descent and the Col Saint Martin with the pass road built into the rock are certainly some of the high points. The ultimate, however, is the world-famous Col de Galibier as the queen stage. Three of the five highest Alpine passes are overcome, including the Col d'Iséran as the highest Alpine pass ever! The descent to the Côte d'Azur is also impressive!
The tour starts in Archamps via Col de Colomiére to St-Jean-de-Sixt. From there the route goes over the Cormet de Roselend to Séez and from there over the Col de l'Iséran to Aussois. Then we take the Col du Galibier, the Col de Vars and the Col de la Bonette to Saint-Sauveur-de-Tinnee. To the Côte d'Azur we then take the Col Saint Martin to our tour destination Menton.

7 pm: Meeting in Archamps for dinner, get to know each other and bike check. Discussion of the overall tour on the basis of maps.
To roll in, we start today over the Col de Saxel and the Col de Plaine-Joux on partly narrow roads in the Savoy Alps and are already rewarded here with high mountain feeling. We continue through spectacular gorges in the direction of Col de Colombiére, which will challenge us towards the end with an increasingly crisp ascent until we reach the highest point at 1613 meters. This high mountain pass only gives an idea of what is still waiting for us, for example, with the Col de Galibier! Our destination today is in the small, tranquil village of St-Jean-de-Sixt.
Our first climbs to Col de Aravis and Col de Saises are accompanied by breathtaking views of the Mont Blanc massif. Via Hauteluce we take the descent via a beautiful side road to our next climb, the Cormet de Roselend. Gradients in the double digits let the thighs burn, but the brilliant view over a lunar landscape and a lake let us quickly overlook the exertions. A varied descent brings us to Sixt.
Today, the Col de l'Iséran awaits us with an altitude of 2764 m and high alpine idyll. The climb does not have any steep ramps, but its length requires stamina. Passing a reservoir, we reach a tunnel that spits us out directly into the high alpine landscapes of the Val d'Isere. On our flowing descent from the Col de l'Iséran, we soak up the impressions of glaciers and high mountains and, once we reach the valley, let today's impressions carry us the last meters up to Aussois.
The name alone "Col du Galibier" of the fifth highest asphalted Alpine pass causes heart palpitations among racing bike fans! This notorious pass, the myth of the Tour de France, we will take on today. To do this, we must first overcome the little brother of the Col de Galibier, the Col du Télégraphe. After that lies the north ramp of the Galibier with a length of about 20 km and 1250 hm and climbs. Now it is called bite, until at the apex an alpine moonscape opens up with views of Mont Blanc and southern four-thousand-meter peaks of the Alps. We have more than earned the descent today.
Today we crank on great asphalt through forests with magnificent views of spectacularly rugged mountain peaks to the top of the Col de l'Izoard pass. Our descent with a short counter-ascension stretches through scree deserts and an impressive gorge towards Guillestre. The first third to the second pass of the day, to the Col de Vars, is once again crisp, then it goes more relaxed up to 2019 m further. On the descent we can let roll and let the landscape rush past us.
Varied altitude meters and kilometers without end, flat sections to rest, views to stop and marvel at and a crisp climb on the last kilometer await us today at the Col de la Bonette (2803 m). Once at the top, a 60 km descent will make the boldest racing bike dreams come true. Gorges along the Tinée lead us to the comparatively easy Col Saint Martin, which rewards us once again with fantastic views of the Vésubie valley shortly before the finish.
The Col de Turini is another real highlight on the program today: the pass road, which is partly built into the rock, winds its way up serpentine after serpentine and always offers great views. The Col de la Madone is the last hurdle. Afterwards, a gigantic descent with the first views of the sea and Nice lies ahead of us, while the narrowing road once again demands good concentration. We have more than earned the toast and celebration!
