Description
Garmisch - Lake Garda
Facts
This tour is a beginner's road bike transalp through beautiful mountain landscapes.
Requirements
We assume basic condition, the climbs are moderate and well rideable with a road bike.
Highlights
For epicures: there are enough opportunities for breaks with culture and coffee - in Merano, Male, Caldaro and at the beautiful Lake Molveno. For the timid: Transalp feeling without risk. This tour is very doable with a basic condition. You should bring a little mountain experience, but mainly be prepared to sit in the saddle all day.
Route
From Grainau near Garmisch we pass Mittenwald into the Leutasch valley and on a long descent down into the Inn valley. From Imst we ride along the Inn River to Landeck. Over the Norbertshöhe we go up to the well-known skiing and hiking paradise Nauders. We leave the Reschensee lake on the left and enjoy the rapid descent into the Vinschgau valley to Meran. Now we drive along small South Tyrolean roads to Lake Kaltern. Continuing on the South Tyrolean Wine Road, we cycle over the Andalo Saddle to the beautiful Molveno Lake and past the picturesque Brenta to our final destination, Lake Garda.

Arrival
Tuesday
Stage 1 - From Grainau to Prutz: approx. 120 km; about 1250 hm
Let's start from Grainau near Garmisch via Mittenwald into the Leutasch Valley. From here we roll down a wonderfully long descent into the Inn Valley. Past Imst we follow the Inn via Landeck to Prutz, our terminus for today.
Wednesday
Stage 2 - From Prutz to Merano: approx. 125 km; about 1200 hm
From Prutz, we ease in, continuing up the Inn River to the Swiss border, where we turn off and pedal up the eleven switchbacks to Norbertshöhe. From here it is only a stone's throw to Nauders. We leave the Reschensee lake on the left and have a rapid descent into the Vinschgau valley ahead of us. Tending to roll downhill, we approach our destination, the spa town of Merano.
Thursday
Stage 3 - From Merano to Tramin: approx. 50 km; about 800 hm
Today we have a shorter day ahead of us, which we can use to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and the Mediterranean climate. We start from Merano in the direction of Lana and drive up the Gampen Pass a bit. At Tisens we leave the pass road and follow a beautiful lonely road in an undulating up and down through small villages and vineyards, before we meet the South Tyrolean Wine Road, which leads us to Tramin. There we spend the night and enjoy the excellent South Tyrolean cuisine over dinner.
Friday
Stage 4 - From Tramin to Lake Garda: approx. 95 km; about 1400 hm
First we continue south along the Adige Valley, then we turn off at Mezzocorona into the Val di Non. From here, it is quite a bit uphill to Andalo. On the descent to the beautiful Lake Molveno we can rest and then have a lunch break on the lakeshore. We continue on a narrow picturesque road to Ponte Arche, where the last short climb is already waiting for us. Then follows a breathtaking descent, past Lake Tenno to Lake Garda. Here we celebrate the arrival at the finish with a delicious ice cream or wheat beer, swim, and enjoy a good Italian final dinner.
